"Always, I try to render the emotion of the land and sense of movement energy of the place or the face. I work in a free, flowing style in oils, watercolour, acrylic and pastels. I received most of my training in California, at the Art Academy of San Fransisco and the University of California. I always fought the age-old battle of science vs. art, art vs. science. I chose the science route as a career, but would meander through the art buildings at SJSU, in California, on my way to the science wings. My father was a gifted artist and cartoonist. His mother was born and raised on Deer Island and he inherited a one-room school house and would pack us up, when summer school break allowed him to escape the California heat and make the yearly pilgrimage from one coast to another. He left me all his palette knives and vast collection of brushes, as well as a summer cottage, his love for this Island and the waters that surround it. I moved here in 1992, married my childhood sweetheart and I do love it, even if I complain about the snowdays."

"You've all heard of 'taking the road less traveled'. Well, I have taken the road through the wilderness that no one else has traveled. Along the way I made many inadvertent discoveries. I believe that the motion I see in all living things - that which animates and forms a telling gesture - equates with Emotion. I see an Emotion that lifts, and it is this Emotion that is at the center of who and what we are - a dynamic part of the human spirit and of all that really matters. It makes the world beautiful and it makes us happy."

"My imagery is inspired by the restorative power of quiet, gentle, yet joyous beauty - the harmonic intertwining of nature and the human heart. It gives me pause and a sense of being part of something wonderful, something transforming. Journeying through my own clattering mind and our too-frequently fast-paced world, this experienced beauty allows me serenity. This is what I want to express through my art. Intuitively this beauty turns into metaphors and my sculptures, paintings, and digital art prints fill with soul illuminated, magical beings, soaring birds, and metamorphosing butterflies. Originally from New York, I have lived and pursued my work as an artist in Eastport, Maine, for over 25 years. My work can be seen in several galleries through out the state, and I am a member of the Maine Sculptors and the New England Sculptors Association."

"In my work, symbolic form is created by means of mass and volume. The basic vocabulary utilizes plane surfaces which capture or modulate light and hollow spaces to evoke the mystery of dark inner sanctums - grotto, cavern, catacomb, labyrinth - the regenerative womb or - -the ultimate void - the choice is the beholder's. On another level, I attempt to show the echos and correspondences between artifacts of culture/technology and elements of biological/geological provenance: alike, all a manifestation of nature."

Perry, Maine 04667
207/853-2921::viola@wabanaki.com

During the art tour Viola will be a guest at Waponahki Museum and Resource Center in Pleasant Point.

Creating traditional beaded items: barrettes, earrings, necklaces, head bands and more, Viola also designs shawls, makes handdrums, regalias and beaded floral vases. She has been beading since youth. Her interest in traditional Passamaquoddy arts led to her becoming an apprentice with tribal traditional artists Clara Keezer (a National Endowment for the Arts, National Heritage Fellowships awardee) learning basketry and with Frances "Gal" Frey.

"I have learned more than the art of basketry from my mentors, Gal and Clara, I learned more about my culture and our Passamaquoddy ways. It was wonderful experience to learn from these two great women." Viola’s love of both art forms has led her to a unique style creating ash and sweet grass baskets combined with beaded embellishments. In addition, she has utilized the beadwork process in group work with teenagers, elders and special needs populations, as a way to assist healing and communicating.

David Umholtz
Home studio: Deer Island, New Brunswick

Pierre Woog - Wood Sculptures (Woogwood)
Woogwood
29 Boynton Street
Eastport, Maine 04631
207/853-6616::pkwoog@gmail.com
www.woogwood.com

The Woogwood ethos is an attempt to clarify my thinking. I only use hand tools and only, with few exceptions, wood that can be found on a woodpile. Thus, a sculpture tends to be flat on both ends and stand between one and two feet in its original state. Each tool and each piece of wood has its own history, and I remember most: the tools I use from my son Keith; the custom-made scrapers from Pictou, Nova Scotia; and those from local flea markets and a modern woodworking store in Hartford, Connecticut, where my daughters attended college. I try to bring out the best of what is inherent in the piece of wood. I only have one over-arching rule in this endeavor: don't violate the grain of the wood. Don't go against the grain. To do so would be to destroy the integrity, the dignity, the soul of the wood

Fisheries practices in the Bay of Fundy continue to be a rich vein of inspiration. I have photographed boats and gear, talked with many fishermen and read scientific reports. From these sources I develop a visual vocabulary of shapes, textures, colours and metaphors that then inform my artwork. It is gratifying to see the work being critically received in both the United States and in Canada. I am now exploring avenues through which my intimate-scale sculptures can expand to architectural dimensions
